SAYING ‘WITH’ & ‘TOGETHER’ IN KOREAN

‘랑’ can be used alone with the noun to express ‘with/together’, but more often it is accompanied by adverbs such as 함께 or 같이.

Article 도 can also be used in a same way as 랑, but it adds nuance of ‘~too/also’, while its meaning of ‘together’ is more subtle than that of 랑.

While 랑 is used mostly for colloquial expression, 와/과 can be used for formal expression. 

WITH, USING 랑/이랑

Structure #1 | Using 랑/이랑

‘랑’ is used when the subject noun ends with a vowel, and ‘이랑’ is used when the subject noun ends with a consonant. 

PATTERN

Subject + 랑/이랑 + object + verb

jeomsimeun nugurang meogeosseo? 

점심은 누구먹었어? 

With whom did you have lunch? 

Structure #2 | Using 함께

PATTERN

Subject + 랑/이랑 + 함께 + object + verb

urirang hamkke bap meogeureo gayo. 

우리랑 함께 밥 먹으러 가요. 

Let’s go out and eat together. 

Structure #3 | Using 같이

PATTERN

Subject + 랑/이랑 + 같이 + object + verb

여행은 누구 같이 갈 꺼에요?With whom will you travel? 
밥이랑 김치 같이 먹으면 맛있어요.Eating rice with Kimchi is delicious. 

WITH, USING 도/이도

The article ‘도/이도’ in Korean means ‘too/also’ but it also has implication of meaning ‘together’.

‘도’ is used when the subject noun ends with a vowel, and ‘이도’ is used when the subject noun ends with a consonant, except if the last syllable of the subject noun contains a vowel ‘이’.

For example, the world ‘선생님 (seon saeng nim – Teacher) ’ ends with a consonant ‘ㅁ’ but with a vowel ‘이,’ and in this case, an article ‘도’ instead of ‘이도’ is used. 

Structure #1

PATTERN

Subject + 도/이도 + object + verb

nado yeohaenge chamgahago sipeoyo.  

여행에 참가하고 싶어요.  

I want to join the trip too (with you). 

Structure #2 | Using 함께

PATTERN

Subject + 도/이도 + 함께 + object + verb

dongsaengdo hamkke gal su isseulkkayo?

동생도 함께 갈 수 있을까요?

Can my brother also join us (or go with us)?
seonsaengnimdo haksaengdeulgwa hamkke siksareul haseyo.

선생님 학생들과 함께 식사를 하세요.

The teacher also eats together with the students.

Structure #3 | Using 같이

PATTERN

Subject + 도/이도 + 같이 + object + verb

gukdo gati meogeul kkeyo.

같이 먹을 께요.

I will also have the soup with the meal.
yeongcheorido 7sie gati yeonghwareul bolkkeoeyo.

영철이 7시에 같이 영화를 볼꺼에요.

Young Cheol will also watch the movie with us at 7 o’clock.

BASIC USE

‘함께’ and ‘같이’ can be used on their own, with a meaning of ‘together’.

In this case, the verbs following usually carry a meaning of ‘favour to do something together’ or ‘let’s do something together’. 

PATTERN

함께 + Verb

같이 + Verb

eomma, gati gayo.  

엄마, 같이 가요.  

Mom, let’s go together (with me)  
chinguneun hamkke saijohge norayaji. 

친구는 함께 사이좋게 놀아야지. 

Friends should play together amicably. 

TOGETHER, USING 와/과 

For formal use of ‘with/with together’ in Korean, article 와/과 can be used.

와 is used when the subject noun ends with a vowel, and 과 is used when the subject noun ends with a consonant.

The structure of the sentence is similar to that for 랑 and 도. 

Structure #1

PATTERN

Subject + 와/과 + object + verb

친구가 영화를 보러 갔어요My friend and I went to watch a movie.
엄마아빠가 저녁을 만들고 있어요.Mom and Dad are preparing dinner.

Structure #2 | Using 함께

PATTERN

Subject +  와/과 + 함께 + object + verb

우리 함께 이 힘든 시기를 버텨나가요.Let’s go through this difficult time together with us. 
함께 여행을 갈꺼에요.I will travel with John. 

Structure #3 | Using 같이

PATTERN

Subject + 와/과 + 같이 + object + verb

sarawa saemeun neul gati deunggyoreul haeyo. 

사라 샘은 늘 같이 등교를 해요. 

Sarah and Sam always go to the school together.
