HOW TO SAY ‘AND’ IN KOREAN

The use of the different ‘and’ in Korean depends on the formality of the context and whether ‘and’ is used to link sentences or objects.

Those four ways are:  

  • 랑(이랑)
  • 하고(고)
  • 와(과)
  • 그리고

USING 랑 / 이랑 

‘랑/이랑’ is the least formal way of saying ‘and’ in Korean.

It is mostly used in a casually spoken language.

‘랑’ is added after a syllable ending with a vowel and ‘이랑’ is added after a syllable ending with consonant.

USING 하고 / 고

‘하고/고’ is most frequently used form of ‘and’ in Korean.

It is generally used in a spoken language and can be used to link two actions or two nouns/objects.

‘고’ is added after action, while ‘하고’ is added after objects or nouns.

‘하고’ can be used after action, if the action is formed from ‘하다’ verb.

PATTERN

Action + 고

Object / Noun + 하고

naneun saengil seonmullo sae gabanghago sinbari gajigo sipeoyo. 

나는 생일 선물로 새 가방하고 신발이 가지고 싶어요. 

I want to have a new bag and a pair of shoes for my birthday.

‘와/과’ is the most formal way of saying ‘and’ in Korean.

The way of using it is equivalent to that of ‘하고/고’, but ‘와/과’ is more formal.

‘와’ is added after a syllable ending with a vowel, and ‘과’ is added after a syllable ending with consonant.

PATTERN

Noun + 와 /

chinguwa yeohaengeul gal gyehoegipnida. 

친구 여행을 갈 계획입니다. 

I will travel with my friend.

‘그리고’ is the only form of ‘and’ in Korean that can link two sentences.

그리고 can also be used to link nouns.

PATTERN

Sentence 1 + 그리고 + Sentence 2

Noun 1 + 그리고 + Noun 2

geunyeoneun mul, eumsik, geurigo swimteoga piryohapnida. 

그녀는 물, 음식, 그리고 쉼터가 필요합니다. 

She needs water, food, and a shelter.
